9/26
Rain, Mud, Humidity, Music:  Well, CrossRoads 2005 is over and we all survived. Thanks and a big shoutout to all the great musicians, our hosts at Eagle Hurst, the stage and sound guys, the core team, and all the festival goers who came out and braved the weather to make it a most memorable weekend.

Friday:
The Festival started with the usual preparations on Thursay night, delivering and setting up the portable stage. Things were going well. Woke up Friday to grey skies but the weather report seemed positive, "no rain til Sunday." Adam Wright, Phil Scherry and their teams set about loading in and setting up the sound equipment. This included a very beautiful and expensive drumkit from Drum HQ. [Thanks to Jim Uding for helping us out with this!!]

No sooner had the equipment all been set and checked than a light drizzle started to fall. Everything was covered quickly but the rain became more insistent. It was then we realized we were in a hurricane blowback pattern and the weather would  be unpredicatable. The decision was made to tear it all down until the rain blew over and set the start time back an hour til 8 pm.

Festival goers began arriving, most later than planned because of the rain, and setting up tents in the dark. Registration was also delayed because of the rain
and the dark, but we got it worked out by the next morning. This was the first
year we started the festival on Friday with the CrossRoads Sound Check and
the motto was always "hang loose, have fun" and that's exactly what we did.

By 8:15 or so, more than an hour behind schedule, our sound guy Adam went on stage with his Encounter Band for a set of praise and worship music. We were off and running and didn't look back. Colleen Macalister followed with a solo acoustic set. She had just arrived from Maldoc, Ontario after a night at San Damiano Monastery with the Franciscans.

By the time the Same Day Kings came on things were jumping, The "kings"
had a fuller, edgier new sound and they soon had the crowd pogoing and crowd surfing, There was a last-minute scheduling change which brought on the Chris Shepherd Band for his third CrossRoads appearance. The addition of a sax player [Fred Middlekauff] gave a touch of jazz to the bluesy sound and Chris's all-star styled band turned in some impressive jams.

The evening ended on a quieter note with Sarah Bauer backed up by
Ryan Meyers on acoustic guitar. Sarah perfomed cuts from her new CD, Lead
Me Home, and Ryan ended the night with a worship song which became a kind
of refrain for the festival, now affectionately referred to as "the hurricane song."

Saturday:
By Saturday, despite the rain, it began to become clear that God had has loving hand on the festival. Unknown to most folks except the core team we were beginning the day without a priest for our evening benediction. While we had done our best to secure one, changing schedules and situations had led one diocesan priest after another to cancel on us. [We need to pray for all these holy men; they are so busy and overbooked!]

CrossRoads is not only about the music. This opportunity to worship the Lord in the Eucharist is at the very heart of what we do. So we had all started holding our need up in prayer, but it looked kind of dim. I couldn't sleep well and woke in the middle of the night to go up to the chapel and pray, begging God again, knowing that he wants his people to have a time and a place for true worship. As I prayed my heart seemed to hear the words God spoke to Abraham, "The Lord himself will provide the ram" though in the deep of night it didn't make much sense.

The day began with breakfast in the dining hall for musicians and staff where you could get last night's chili over your eggs. As breakfast was winding down a large tour bus drove onto the grounds. I knew this would be the group from our local military base, Ft. Leonard Wood. As I hurried to greet them a tall muscular priest [West Point graduate we later learned] stepped off the bus with button down cassock, regulation haircut and holding a baby. "Is this the guy?" I prayed.

Fr. Matt introduced himself, but told me he had to be back on base in the afternoon for confessions and mass. I explained our predicament. He said he believed he could be back for adoration and would consider it. Later in the morning, he confirmed he would. Praise God!

After an opening prayer from our MC, Paul Masek, we kicked off the music with hometown boy turned Nashville guitarmaker Pete Buncher. Pete was a veteran of our first CrossRoads and it was great to have him back to get us rollling! Then, introducing themselves as "Old Farts for God," Nathanael's Creed followed with a solid set including some new material from their third CD, scheduled to drop in Novemeber. Keep an ear out for the exact time and place of the release party. When we get the word, we'll let you know.

Some times schedules change close to the last minute. Less than a month before the festival, when we thought the artist roster was close to set in stone, we became aware of a group called The Priestie Boyz. These are five guys from Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis. Ordinarily we wouldn't book this late in the game and we never book a group we haven't heard play, but a bunch of rockin' seminarians was just too good to pass up. And they did rock out! We're all looking forward to the rumored CD.

One of this year's innovations was the interview segment which bridged the staging changes between bands. Bumpered in and out with a song titled "I Wanna Talk About Me," MC Paul interviewed selected artists, core members, guests and people from the audience. With wit and insight Paul plumbed the depth of each guest eliciting honest stories of faith and the occassional laugh at their expense. And it provided a wonderful opportunity to get to know performers a bit more personally.

Having almost recovered from her long drive, Colleen Macalister came on stage to offer acoustic takes of songs from her new CD as well as some praise and worship. If you missed "the Frog Song" you can still hunt it down on the CrossRoads radio link.

Matthew Baute has been with us all three years and has stretched out from a solo performer to front his new band, Dayspring. At around seven members, Dayspring filled the stage with players and sound [but still took only second place in the biggest band competition]. Their set mixed the occassional worship standard with their own outstanding songwriting.

Sarah Bauer came back with a reprise of her Friday night gig, backed up by hurrican "evacuee" Ryan Meyers on acoustic guitar. Sarah treated us to cuts from her first two CDs, as well as an impromtu bit of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in her incredibel voice, before giving the stage over to Ryan who went out with his instant hit "Wherever Your Treasure Is."

It's good that we have a large stage but Exodus Two Zero did it's best to fill it up. With a ten musician ensemble and deep rythm section they cranked out the music including original worship and praise. Some festival goers comared their sound to Crispin the Catholic funk band.

Just before the dinner break Paul introduced Father Augustine of the St. Louis Abbey. He led the crowd through a hilarious discourse on "How to Dress Like a Benedictine" which included dressing out audience volunteers. Father Augustine also presided at the "Traveler's Mass" during the dinner break in the chapel and had a full house of worshippers.
